In August 2007, the project was reinvigorated with Joseph Kosinski hired as the new director and a new script being written by screenwriter Timothy J. Sexton.
I also read somewhere that the new movie should be closer to the book than the original flick which wasn't very close at all.

This thing has been shelved so many times now it will be a miracle if it gets produced. I am a huge fan of the movie too so I really do hope it is made. Supposedly, in the new flick, you go for renewal at 21 and not 30 like the first movie. this is supposed to be closer to the original story, though I cannot say as I have never read it (saw the fn movie already, you know).
