When I try to do a disk cleanup, during the first part where it is compressing old files, my screen goes black and then the system shuts down. Any ideas?
Plenty of disk space left (10+ GB), no detected viruses, systems runs fine otherwise.

Sup Chicken,
Take a look at http://www.auslogics.com/en/software/disk-defrag. Download and run.
May also want to create a fresh profile and see if you have the same issue.
I am assuming you are running Windows XP.

That is an awesome defrag program. I use Diskeeper that I paid $$$ for and it is every bit as good in the realtime defrag. Thankspebcak wrote:Sup Chicken,

Just thought I'd update that I discovered the root problem of this. My system would shut down when I ran the defragmenter because my CPU's were overheating.
I have a gaming laptop and when I would run any kind of intensive program the whole system would shut down. Turns out from a small CPU temperature utility I downloaded that my CPUs under load were running in excess of 90C. At idle it was running at around 60C. So it was cutting out to save itself.
Turns out dust buildup in all the airflow areas was the culprit and after a vacuuming of all vents and blowing everything out with some compressed air I knocked it down some 20C!! I'm now running around 41C at idle and mid 60's under load.
