Wireless help needed

Unread post by Tommy »

Trying to be brief here as I am typing on the floor and my wrists are killing me...

My apartment was struck by lightning yesterday...massive damage...

Computer ethernet port is fried and will not easily or cheaply be repaired...

I need to be educated about wireless options.

My Mac has built in "Airport" wireless. I want to know about wireless routers and what I will need. I am thinking of going non-apple brand as apple branded stuff is expensive.

I saw a belkin 802.11g wireless router at tiger direct for under 40 dollars. Would that work? To be honest i do not know what protocols airport even supports, I know about nothing of wireless.

Someone want to educate me?

Thanks,

Tommy

I don't think you'll be happy gaming with FPS on wireless LAN connections :/

Put a PCI/PCIe ethernet card in the computer.

Something like:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6833106005

or

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6833106121

I think you are going to tell us that your Mac is one of those things is all built into the monitor with no chance of PCI/PCIx addins (hope not). Soo....

Try:

http://www.usbgear.com/USBG-UE200.html

that *says* it works with MacOSX. ymmv

Motorola says this about your SB4100 (which I have been using for the last 7 years, and it works beautifully still):

It's messed up. I am running Mac OS X 10.4.11.

The drivers needed to do the USB are in 10.5.

If I had 10.5 I could do it right from the modem without the adapter. And with the adapter I still need 10.5.

No way to upgrade to 10.5 from the machine unless I buy it.

Bender: "Yup, we're boned."

Not sure if you had figured this one out yet, but the mac "airport" is just what they call 802.11b, and what everyone else refers to as WiFi.

Any router with a web UI should get the job done. Any router is able to communicate with a mac. So go to the store and choose whatever one you like.

If you get the Wireless "G" router it will be backwards compatible with A and B!
Just don't expect too much speed out of the older compatibility modes.
