usb problems
usb problems
I HAVE AN OLD PC THAT I GOT FOR MY KID,AND THE USB PORTS ARE NOT PICKING UP ANYTHING.THE PC WORKS BUT THE USB ARENT WORKING ,CAN SOMEONE TELL ME WHAT I SHOULD DO?
Re: usb problems
Does it have more than one set? Some machines have some on the back off the board and then some in the front, the front ones could be unplugged. What version of windows is on it, that will make a difference what we tell you to do. First thing to check in XP would be look in control panel>system>hardware tab>device manager
Look at the bottom of the list and see if it has a bunch of USB stuff or not. What are you trying to make work on USB and have you tried a different device?

Re: usb problems
Something funny with the XP updates... The USB would show that it is available and working properly but will not be able to use anything on them except a mouse and keyboard. A rollback of the OS or a reinstall of the OS would be a fix. Updates for the motherboard or the final updates, updates, updates for the computer would may just be in order.
The - XP SP3 Update - for just about any old computer install would have this effect. Nobody at Microsoft was thinking straight about this. The "SP3" itself is a Failure and I am suffering myself with it in many ways.
I would scrap it and go with a clean XP SP3 Install... Should be able to pick up the ISO right off of the Microsoft Website.
Windows XP Service Pack 3 - ISO-9660 CD Image File

Use your favorite CD/DVD burning proggy!!!
I'm not too clear if you could use an old XP Key with this CD/ISO. May need a "Genuine Update" Use a spare Hard Drive to test it out first. Write down the make and version of the motherboard, video and sound so you can grab all the drivers for your system before you reinstall everything.
I hope that you get that PC back up and running soon.

Re: usb problems
Make sure the drivers are installed for them. Should be in device manager and look like this.
If there is an exclamation mark it means the driver is not installed.

Dude! The drivers are there and falsely report that they are working properly... With the old SP1 & SP2 installs updating to SP3 may kick out the USB ports. Just updating the USB drivers will not fix this... A fresh install of WinXP SP3 will.Concrete wrote:Make sure the drivers are installed for them. Should be in device manager and look like this.

Re: usb problems
On some boards I have also seen bios issues, there might be a bios flash update to fix,
