Gifs are built from several images in secuence. To convert a movie in a gif first you need to take several captions from the movie.

With a program like Gif Generator, you can built your gif using the caps. 😮

If you take the caps from your movie, I can built your gif....

If you want of course... 😀

For example, this gif was built from a movie taken to NATAN in the x-loc server...

But that's part of the problem...I can't figure out how to capture a still image from a DVD.

You need to use the movie maker or a program to crop images..., first you pause the movie and then you take a snap shot...

Try this Cygnus play the movie till the sequence that you want to capture (this is for gifs) pause, push CTRL and Print screen buttons together then open paint and paste image into it then save as gif image do this for the sequence then as R-Mad posted you need a gif creation programme or ask R-Mad to assemble them for you as for the movie part Razor might be able to help you there when he's finished his farmer thing.....

I have the usual windows media player and Realplayer. Couldn't find a way to record a still pick or a short clip. How do I do this? And how do I convert a short clip of a movie into a gif?

For a still pick, VLC will take a snapshot. VLD will play DVD's too (it plays everything).

Dunno about a clip though, Razor would be the man to ask.

Depending on the output Codec of what the player is using you will get a negative(blank) color of what the video frame is supposed to be... "Video Overlay" is to blame for this.

Cyberlink Power DVD will allow you to capture the video frame into a picture or to your clipboard depending on your settings.

Do not play with any settings in Windows Media player as you might not get it to work well afterward.

Yes, VLC is free!. Another program that might work is "Windows Media Player Classic", usually comes with CCP(Community Codec Pack) or "K-Lite Mega Codec Pack"... Make sure those Codec Packs are safe before you use them.

Make sure that your file associations are intact... I've seen allot of trouble with a computer when you have a bunch of programs fighting for a file type.

If you can get the clip you want to make into a avy then Super will make vids into gif files.
