He caught it with the Barbie rod and reel. Made Yahoo News. Not too shabby.

Those kiddie reels usually come loaded with at least 8 or 10 pound test line but if you fight the fish and let it exaust itself its not that difficult to get it into shore.
While it's nice to have a higher pound test line it is much more important in how you play the fish. If you try to use brute force in a 'tug-of-war' type fight, you'll quickly snap your line. You have to let the fish run with the line until it tires and then reel it in until it tries to run again. You just keep repeating the process until it is too tired to run anymore. It is important to remember that if you plan to release the fish not to exaust it to the point of not being able to recover.
I once fought a 4 foot lake sturgeon about half an hour with only 8 pound test line. It rolled on the bottom and wrapped itself up about 7 or 8 times and the line was stretched pretty bad by the time I landed it but I did land it. Sturgeons are pretty tough and it took off almost as soon as I released it.
Those kind of fights are always fun.
The shortest fight I've had is when I was bottom fishing the Chippewa River in Eau Claire with a crawler. I had a hit and picked up the pole and set the hook. The fish pulled back with such force I was certain the rod would snap if I didn't let my arms straighten out. The line snapped as soon as the rod straightened toward the fish. It was like setting the hook on a Mack truck. The whole thing took less than a couple of seconds. Had to have been a massive Sturgeon or Catfish.
yes i knew how.. but still shocked ๐ฎ
i was fishing in this creek were we had caught like 15 lb catfish and my friend set his new rod down and about 5 min later the thing flys straight in the water (usally i would have put a drag on it, but this guy didnt) we went back a few days later and realed in the damn thing thought i was stuck at 1st... it was a big shock
