As I have had a lot more time lately to work on some projects, working from old to new, I have been working on getting a map project done.
The idea is to collect every UT99 map that can be found and then make them available. This way we can greatly increase the amount of good maps for our servers. Every map will be made available on the website too for the benefit of the UT99 community.
In addition to all the maps that I had, I raped a few public redirect sites with a site downloader and am in the process of converting the .uz files to their original files. Considering there were more than 100,000 files this took a lot of time as my converter will only let me batch about 300 at a time. I have about 30,000 left to do. However, since I sorted by size and started with the largest files and worked my way down, it is going really fast now and I think I will be done in the next few days.
When this is done I will add all of the other map files I have over all over my other drives into one master dir.
Then the hardest part comes. I will one at a time build zip files of each map with it's associated files. I have a program that will help me with this but it will still be a slow and tedious process.
This is where the rest of you come in.
This is a call for map files. Just .unr files for now. I figure many of you play on other servers and have some pretty decent map collections. What I am asking is that for anybody who wants to do this, you would zip or rar your maps folder and upload it to our ftp server. I can then add the maps to the master and include them in the project. I figure there are probably a lot of additional maps that can be gained this way.
Please understand, for those that do this, I only want the .unr files for now. Uploading your entire game dir will be too big for you and actually a bit of a hassle for me. Considering how much I have, I will already have most of the texture / sound / music ect. files anyway. Later when there are files that i need that I don't have, I will ask for them.
I tried to set up anon ftp on the site, but like everything else canaca that we do, whenever we first try, a ticket needs to be put in because somethingis broken. So, as soon as I hear back from them I will post details about where the uploads will go.
For now, I am just curious to see who thinks they would be willing to do this. It's fairly simple - zip directory, upload directory. It will be one of those uploads that you start when you go to bed as it will take a night to upload.
Also, I am thinking of posting this in the general area so some non-members can help out to if they wish.

This is the last call for anybody who may be interested in helping build this online collection.
To date, the only person who has done this is Darkmatter, and in doing so added a few hundred maps to the collection. He uploaded over 1000 but the rest I had. Still, 200 is a great addition and well worth the time. There may be some great maps in that 200.
I am done sorting everything but the umods. I am going to start extracting them right now. Very soon I will begin building the zips and uploading the maps.
I figured this was the best project to work on and given that I wanted to do this for a few years, it was time.
There are other things I know many of you want me to do too, but I figure as soon as I start uploading these, most of you will forget about everything else. Because, hey, tons of new maps. And that's what the game is all about.

User name is anonymous and a password is not required.
I am starting to build the zips now so people need to upload anything they have ASAP.

Ok I am zipping my UT maps directory and I have another 3 gigs of maps in Zips on a dvd.. if you want me to send those as well I can but I am not going to unzip them all and re-zip the .unr files. Let me know if you want me to send the others as well. I have 47 Embedded maps Skull Skewer did which means they are maps with all the the required files Embedded into them..
I'm on a Mac, so I can just use Automator to get the unr files out of the zips, easy as eatin' pancakes.
Please make sure that you navigate into the incoming folder before uploading though. I dunno why they set it up the way they did, but it works so I am leaving it alone. Otherwise I will have to lose a year of my life explaining it to their tech support.
Once these maps start coming up, everybody is gonna have their hands full. 🙂
