A thought...

It is a rule in this clan that topics about religion and politics not be brought up. I stand by this thinking it is a very good idea.

However, the 2008 US presidential elections are close at hand.

I am thinking it might be fun to create a politics area on the forum just until then, and then maybe a week after the election cook it and go back to the old rules.

This way everybody can get it out of their system. A few forum members (but not DOU members that I have noticed) have already skirted the rules anyway by adding political views in their signatures. Specifically I have seen some Ron Paul stuff (and may I add, what an angry man he is, lol).

I've had the opportunity before to participate in this type of thing on other forums and had a lot of fun. The idea is that ahead of time we let everybody know that material that may be offensive to some may be present. As a matter of fact, the fun part comes from offending the other people. During the 2004 election I had a lot of fun posting those Bush "Enjoyed Coke" images and the like. Then other republican nut-jobs who came to the forum would post similar offensive stuff about Kerry. Since we all knew we were pushing each others buttons it actually was a lot of fun and the forum traffic really picked up.

I think I could write up some basic rules that would keep things from getting out of hand, and policing to make sure that they don't get out of hand anyway.

If anybody would like me to further define what I think would be acceptable rules before casting your vote, let me know in this thread. Otherwise, please vote. If the majority of you think that this is a bad idea then I will not go forward with it.

No need to explain your vote either way, unless you would like to add a comment (which is great if you do).

I obviously voted in favor of it, otherwise I would be a complete and total asshole (EscapedTurkey).

If you have a political view, you would be allowed to express it.

Welps, the masses have spoken, so I will not do it. I think I might create a proboards forum just for the occasion.

However, I would like to throw out an early "I told you so" here. I thought it would be good to keep all the political comments in one place (and maybe have a little fun).

Without that, as this year continues we will be a lot of people breaking the rules. Don't think so? Take a look at this thread itself. I was just asking if we should have an area and Larry, Dylan, and Jarg all seized on this as an opportunity to express their political views (even though it was not an expressed opportunity to do so). So they vote no to a politics area and then use this thread for that purpose anyway. It's only going to get worse as the year progresses.

It's fine with me, really, lol. I am just saying I don't think the majority of you thought it through before voting.

Creating a proboards forum would not be any different, you get DOU members on there bitching back and forth about politics will just bring the tensions & ill feelings back here.

I didn't say I was creating a proboards forum for DOU to discuss politics. I don't remember saying that I was gonna give the link to any of you either. Why would I, with the exception of one other person you all voted no.

If I still think it would be fun and want to go off and do it on my own, then thats my business. 😛
