Lightning is hard on stuff. It turns my power off all the time during storms but hasn't damaged anything for a few years. You'll get it all fixed, it just takes a while to get it all figured out...

Damn, sorry to hear about all that. My house where I grew up used to get hit by lightning all the time. We were on top of a hill and the house the tallest thing around. Beautiful views at a price. We had 7 lightning rods on the house all grounded which helped, but we still lost some amount of electronics yearly. Usually the TV, telephones and lamps. Anything plugged in. All this was before the computer age and internet which was good.

One time it came in during a storm (we were in the finished basement) and the lightning came in next to my dad who was on the couch and toasted the lamp on the end table and scattered the papers that were on it all over the floor. It was such a loud explosive sound and flash, you would have thought a tank canon went off in the room. We always had to check for fire after those incidents.

Anyway, so I know how powerful that a direct strike can be. Just take your time and get your personal shit in order first. Hope things improve quickly.

Here is an update (if you can call it that):

The cable company blew me off again today. They promised to be here between 8-12 this morning...nothing...then they said definitely between 1-5...it's almost 3:30 and they aren't here. So I figure it will be Monday at the earliest now. I am not as concerned about the tv as I am about the phone service. I will never again go with a phone service other than POTS.

As for the insurance company. Apparently Wednesday they just told me whatever. So I guess nobody is yet scheduled to come out. Today they told me that someone has been assigned my case and I need to wait for them to call me. I am assuming that this won't be until Monday at the earliest now too. For the call i mean, god knows when someone will come out. But if i am a second late with my payment!!!!

So...has anybody ever made an insurance claim like this? I have never made an insurance claim on anything in my life so I do not know what to expect. If anyone has, please clue me in on what the likely process will be.

But other than this...I mam still where I was Wednesday night.

T

I *may* have figured out a temporary solution. I need someone who is handy with Windows XP to come to either IRC or AOLIM (screen name = chezzy1111).

Welps, my luck ran out. As I had suspected, there appears to be more damage to my main machine then first noticed.

I left the machine on last night while I slept to upload some files. When I came to it this morning it looked normal except that it appeared to not be waking from sleep mode (windows).

Well, on reboot, the machine is turning on but not starting up, not even the start-up chime when it is switched on.

I don't know if this indicates a bad logic board or a bad power supply? It is the exact same thing that happened to the machine in the other room. Even the monitor doesn't turn on, which *leads me to believe* that it is the power supply.

Called the insurance company today and I guess they have been sitting on their hands. They assured me that the check would be out to the mail today. So that means a day or 2 to get it, then I have to deposit it and wait for it to clear. So I guess I am looking at next week now before I will be up and running.

If anybody knows anything about fixing power supplies (replacing) or even determining if it is the issue, please let me know. If it is the logic board then the machine is fucked. If it is the power supply(s), then maybe one or both of the machines could be brought back to life eventually?

Anyway, see everybody next week. I will be around on this POS as I can, but I can't do much. If the server goes down, talk to DarkMatter or try to get a hold of _J on IRC in the #DOU channel.

I don't have much experience working on computers, as you all know, but I have worked many times with debt collection and also insurance companies. They try to hang on to their ( they see it as theirs till they part with it) money as long as they can before paying a claim. It's collecting interest for them. They do this with all claims these days, or at least the ones I've dealt with out here. The squeaky wheel gets the grease. Don't be dissagreeable with them, on the contrary always be polite. No one wants to help you if you're a pain. Just call them often for a status report on your claim and they will get it done to get rid of you 🙂 . Be a pleasent pain in the ass and you'll get takin care of. It couldn't hurt to tell them that you run a home based business that's suffering from the loss of your computer. People always empathize (to some degree) with a good sob story.

Good luck !
