[Sticky] DOU 2k4

I have played some 2k4 and it's about as fun UT99.

If the clan wanted to move in that direction I would be O.K. with it.

If we want to explore this further, I would suggest taking the 2k4 server and setting it up as close to our UT99 sniper server as we can. I'm pretty sure it is a multiserver at the moment.

By doing this we can better decide if it's a transition we really want to make.

At the very least it would afford another option for those who are fed up dealing with all the riff raff on the UT99 server.

If we were to eventually become a 2k4 clan, why not then password the UT99 server and leave it for DOU and Friends? That would be a good poke in the eye for those assholes who have been making it so miserable for us.

That'd be alright,but we could also change the xloc server to a private server ,password it and just send it out to the forum members.

There is no reason why we can't do both. I know a lot of people (myself included) would be very unhappy getting rid of UT99. I don't even currently have a computer that can run UT2k4.

I always wanted to move in the direction of adding more 2k4 stuff anyway so I see no problem in talking about this.

Here is what I suggest and see as necessary. We wait a bit and really plan this out. The server is really taxed right now with everything we have running on it. As most of you know, I have quit FN permanently this time, and by the fact that they have removed all of my abilities on the site, it seems apparent that they understand this.

We currently have 2 servers running on FN, the 5v5 camping ladder server and the 1v1 uzi server. I think it could be very uncool and we would look bad if we just cut the servers now. But I don't really see keeping the servers up indefinitely since I really don't give a shit about FN anymore. Seriously, the globals really ruin the ladders by their inaction allowing all the shit that goes on to happen. So I suggest that when each of the ladders seasons ends we then cut the servers. As a side note, I don't have any problems with us still playing in ladders for as long as we want to. If we still want to for fun's sake, then lets do it. But on the other side, I really don't want to support the site anymore either. I am hoping that the extent of DOU's involvement going forward will be as nothing more than participants in ladders. Now, how I really feel - I have been in a bad way for a while now as many of you know. I have also worked for free for FN for several years. When I was in a really bad way, they would not even allow a post on their forum just to let other people know what was up with me. So, they wanted both my time and resources, but then kicked me while I was down. I really feel nothing but contempt for those people now and want to sever all ties with them as soon as possible.

Welps, sorry about the detour, back on topic now. Go ahead and start discussing all of this. Lets take time and plan everything out. I will start with a suggestion. Lets clean up the current server and remove all components from it that are not Uzi Freezetag. TBH, when we used to play it all the time before my problems, that is what we played anyway and nothing else, I believe many of us will still want that. Then, put up a second server that is a camping / sniper server. In the past I thought the multi-server concept was a cool idea. But now I see that it is actually a bad idea. Different people come and want to play different games and then nobody is happy.

I know UT99 has been a great part of everyone's UT love affair ! See : I've known Darkmatter as a terrific Redeemer player in Curious George Redeemer Insanity, where I've been playing agains Bison three days ago !!! Under my old times name <SRA>LePoLoo... And now Darkmatter is totally involved in sniping on UT99 and with a serious skill ! Things go changing...

BTW, Dave, I played there with Jimm400 !!! Loads of thoughts of the good old times !...

Now, I know that UT2K4 is rolling (like UT99 first did for a longer time than we could imagine !).

A personal reflexion is that high ping is not that frustrating in 2K4 than in UT99 !? I don't know why... may be programmers made a better job ?...

I would be very glad if DOU could be a famous 2K4 sniping and camping server ! And I tell you again 2K4 is no less exciting than 99 !

So guys, let everybody know your opinions and Tommy could know what to do then. Feel free to say what you think about the actual problems with 99 and all the lamers that a ruining this game. Feel free to say what you think about 99 and 2K4... Feel free to discuss it and let's see if we all can find all the fun we expect in one or the other of these two games.

I say cut the FN servers now ,why should we keep them running when we re the one's paying the bills,and the wouldn't help you out when you where down,also what about branching out to other games like BF2,Fear,HALO,or others?

Considering the server resources that we have to work with...

What Games can we host that we are knowledgable about maintaining?

Which servers do we need to keep?

Which Games are we able to play?

A little research might be in order to what is NEW and POPULAR out there where we can jump-into something new.

I think a 2k4 sniper server would be a great idea. I backed the idea last time it was brought up too. The idea of branching out beyond UT and doing other games is a good idea but I think doing too much at one time would be too much of a disturbance in the force. Perhaps we should start the 2k4 server then a couple months later open up a new game server or vice versa. Don't want to have too much going on at one time cause problems pile up by the dozens and the ppl doing all the work may get burnt out quick.

Any games with free multiplayer versions would be a good idea (example F.E.A.R has free multi, but their cheat detection sucks).

Most ppl, including myself, won't go out and pay a lot of money for a new game. I got UT free then became addicted and bought the triligy with 2k4. Perhaps get a list of games and put a poll up. Maybe put a poll for ppl to chose what mem their graphics cards have and one for their processor/ram so we can figure out what our players can run on their computers.

I think finding a way to turn a profit with our servers is a great idea. Can we sell advertising space based on our server traffic to the graphics card manufacturers or other hardware manufacturers ? how about the game manufacurers ?

There ought to be some way to turn a profit with this set up to help pay for the costs of running it.

Branching out too far is a VERY bad idea.

5 different people in vent that play 5 different games. None want to play the other games. So 5 people go and play their own games. They get invited to the vent's of the servers they are on. Goodbye clan.

I think it would be fine to add a second game beside the UT Trilogy. Possible ones I had in mind were either WoW or the Quake Trilogy. I know we have several DOU members who play WoW so that would be cool, and also Quake is a 3rd person shooter like we already play and has a lot of people playing it (them) so people may enjoy that.

But throwing up a lot of different games will kill the clan.

yeah i had that ideal thats why i put the poll up to narrow it down ,the games with the most vote would be considered till we got down to 1 or 2 games the clan would play.
