Need some computer help.

I have a used computer that I picked up a couple years ago. The hard drive went to hell on me and I ordered a replacement. The info on the replacement said it was compatible with older computers.

Well, when I went to swap the drives I discover pin arrangement where you plug the cable into is different. That's where I am now stuck.

I need an adaptor or a cable that will let me plug the new HD into the system.

Does such a thing exist and if so, what is it called?

If the new hard drive is sata, you will need a sata I/O card to plug into one of the pci slots.

they start at about $10.00

you also would need a power converer plug a couple bucks.

If the new drive is IDE, some will only take a newer 80pin cable. the older cables were called 40 pin, some info below.

The cable in the computer looks like the 80 wire, 40 pin variety. The replacement HD is, I am guessing SATA since it doesn't have the pins like the old one.

So if I am reading the info right, I need an l/O card and that should solve my problem?

Yes if you don't have sata plugs on the motherboard then you will need a pci card and power adapter.
