Received the following message from Nuke Iran. Concrete and I were shooting around the idea (pun intended) to see if he wanted to join. We asked him this morning if he had thought about it before and said he would be interested. He also stated he had a bad taste in his mouth from ZSZ telling him to change his name to something else (dont know if that was a condition to join or just play on the server in general) so I think that this may have affected his outlook on clans in general. I have XXXXX'ed out his email address and first name. Anyway, the PM he sent me:
Hey Mr.Underhill,
It's me NUKEiran. As we were talking about earlier today I would like to know if you would like to sponsor me into the DOU Clan. My real name is XXXXX but i ask that you don't use it online. My e-mail is XXXXXXXXX As I stated earlier I really like the DOU guys and would be proud to join your clan.
Thanks XXXX NUKEiran
And my reply:
Very nice of you to request this but since I've only been a member of DOU for a short peiord of time (doesn't seem like it) they probably would no let me sponsor you.
In any case, first things first. Please go to http://www.clandou.com and fill out the app. I know quite a few people that say good things about you on the server so I'm very optiimistic about your chances.
If you have any questions until someone is assigned to you as a sponsor, please feel free to IM me - no problem. From there, your sponsor will work with you to show you the ropes.
Regards,
John (Mr Underhill)
Since we don't do political statements at our server I think his name would be a problem for us either.
His name can't be seen other than a political statement imo.
See "Joining Clan {DOU}"
Clan DOU Membership Policy
2) No politics or religion themed topics should be brought up in the server or on the message boards. If that's your thing, find an organization or club more suited to those topics. This is a gaming clan, we are here to have fun in a relaxed atmosphere.
I've moved this post to the members area.
Doesn't offend me personally but then I'm not Iranian. I'm not sure what the clans position on this would be based on our doctrine but I tend to agree with NATAN, his name is a political statement and would be a problem for some

I think we are going over-board. I am a hard-core liberal and it doesn't bother me. I think it was probably some name he thought up years ago thinking he was clever and it just stuck. Not like anyone from Iran would ever play here anyway.
A better thing to do would be to get him into vent and have a conversation with him. Then see if he is too politically motivated to leave it at the door. I don't think we can get an idea just from the handle.
A couple of thoughts, if you use the name "James Bond," is that a political statement against Russians? What if you use "Hell Bringer?" Too racy for potential Christians who may join the server? There is a C-Ops guy who uses the name "Jesus." Nobody kicks him.
I hear what people are saying, but I think we may be taking it too far in interpretation of the rule.

In the past I played lot the time with this guy in the WOLF server. I liked him because is a good player and very respectful about the rules.
About a year ago I invited him to join our forum or including to join our clan. He refused, mentioning his name. Naively, I did not find nothing wrong with that, because I had no idea about what Nuke Iran means...
Reading Mr Underhill's post, I realized something was wrong in his name.
Now I know what his nickname means, so my opinion is an absolute NO.
I agree with NATAN, his name is a political statement...
And I'm not Iranian but his name is offensive for me.
James Bond is a character in a novel, even the Russians like him... Is not offensive.
Jesus is a very popular name in Mexico and South AmΓ©rica, and was the name of a uncle of mine... Is not offensive.
Hell Bringer.... (Tommy you are exaggerating...), may be R_Mad is offensive for sane people...?
The problem is not the noun or adjective, IS THE STATEMENT
I don't agree with that Tommy. We had players with names as "Judenmorder" (german for Jewmurderer) and "pop-da-nigga". Where do we draw the line here. I'm thinking the same as mAmA. I don't care for personal reasons if the guy chooses a name like that, but I think it has its consequences. Remember if he's gonna be a member his name will be {DOU)NukeIran. Doesn't sound that fresh in my ears.
The examples that you're giving are not that relevant. "Jesus" is a genuine name in most Hispanic countries. The name "James Bond" doesn't imply a political statement against Russians at all imho. The name NukeIran however does imply that the person wouldn't mind dropping The Bomb upon this country. With the DOU tag in front of that name, we will suggest that we as a clan agree on that. Even if no person from Iran ever played here on the server that still wouldn't make it right.
If the person that uses this name has no political intentions, than he most likely wont have a problem to change it.

Totally agree with NATAN
I agree with Tommy. Doesn't bother me. The guy is always nice and plays decent.
The names that natan mentioned were both SS and he talked the message of them the entire time. I have yet to ever hear mr nuke ever say anything political even if his name is. Lots of names can be offensive. Hell Evil is a stupid as fuck name, it's just what I had on at the time when I came on here and people knew me by it so I kept it. People could be offended by yomama or urxwife or warmonga just as easily. Everyone that talks to bison ends up offended. π I've seen a lot worse names than his around. Also if ZSZ told him to change it then that's a good reason to keep it. π

Some questions
What's the difference between "Nuke Iran" and "Kill a Jewish" for example...?
The first does not bother some of you... then why the second one is so repulsive?
Following Evil's words, If a SS guy is always nice and plays decent, that's OK for us?
The phrase Nuke Iran bother me. Not the player.
I will say him that... for sure.
I see both sides here but agree with one.
Hell, I feel kinda bad in pointing the name thing out there to begin with. Believe me, I saw some of this conversation before hitting the "submit" button for my post. The last thing I wanted to do was to sink this guy should we get to a point where he wants to keep his name but we want him in. All the same, I thought it would be a healthy discussion and wanted to be forthcoming about it.
For the record, I've played quite a few maps with him and had some pretty good chats with him as well in the past. Within those chats, NOT ONCE has he brought up any sort of political posturing. If I asked him, I'm sure he would answer. But, it's against our rules AND... I don't care one way or another.
I don't mind the pre-judging I've seen on this post frankly because if someone came in by the name "Hitler" or something to that effect, yeah, admittedly, I might have a problem with that. I probably would take the stand thinking that person had little to contribute to society and is probably stealing my oxygen. At the same time, it's not like I need to be bowling partners with the guy either. I'm not going to be hypocritical about this subject but "NukeIran" is a long way away from Hitler.
At the end of the day, I think that we should treat him no differently than any other recruit. After all, it is just that - a name for playing UT, not a declaration of faith or conviction.
I'l roll with whatever the majority decides on this. I have heard nothing but good things about the player and have nothing against him personally. I was concerned about the consequences of him attaching our tag to his name, thats it. I come here for fun, not to battle with people. I get enough of that in my real life.
mAmA
Sorry folks, I still see it as a violation of our rules. If he were to become a recruit I would vote NO because of that alone.
Don't care if he acts like a boy scout. The name crosses the line.
I also don't see a stretch between 'Nuke Iran and using 'Hiter' for a nick. Hitler ordered the deaths of 6 million Jews. Nuke Iran implies a person wants to kill millions of Iranians.
I don't want to see a {DOU} in front of that.
π hmmm
very interesting!
What if he just changed the first letter, from an "N" to a "P".Then his name would be PukeIran or IranPuke. How many of "us" would be offended by that? I really do see BOTH sides of this conversation, and am personally undecided about all of it..................
The only thing I begin to wonder is; If he does change his name to whatever else, where would it stop? Would "we" be recruiting him for his "name" or his "gameplay" or "what kind of car he drives". Think about it like this, If a new recruit had the name "IHateEvery1",but was one of the best players around.Never broke the rules, always polite, willing to help anyone out, anytime.Would "we" be offended by the name of that person,or would "we" overlook the name, for the benefit of having a great player.
I DONNO............................................ π
