I used to be against Norton completely but so far i really like it. When i reformatted my computer last weekend i went with Norton full since it comes with my isp, and it is very nice. I like being able to check a file that i downloaded and see that thousands of other people who use Norton have already used it and found it to not contain viruses or cause problems. The only downside currently is that there is no google chrome extension for it, so for the safest browsing and password protection you are restricted to IE and Firefox.

Google Chrome itself is supposed to be safe from viruses. - Info via TWiT Podcast(I hate it when they go off topic)
There are some less known good AV scanners out there like Panda and Chartered Accountants(CA). But people will still trust the Names.
