I finally got ahold of an actual quake 2 cd, no more folders from questionable sources. Those of you who would like to downlad it and try it out can get it at:
Please don't share the link with other people or our bandwidth will be eaten up and then no boards for the rest of the month. We have plenty of bandwidth now so don't worry about it, but if the link were posted and 2000 people came to get it then we'd have problems π
It is a really fun game, I recommend that all of you try it out. The stock game is a bit dry, but the mod I run on our server is really serious fun π

Cool. I'm D/L now. π

After you get it installed let me know and I will show the server to you π

Is this program just for a MAC OS? Cause there is a Mac file and my PC doesn't recognize anything else.
Hermskii
It's a PC disc image

The files came thru as .BIN files which I've never heard of. But I Googled them and they are Macintosh-based files.

lol, .bin = binary.
Give me time and I will explain it to you. It is NOT a mac file that you downloaded.

Ok, like I said, I've never heard of those file extentions, but these are why I thought they were Mac files.
From Microsoft website:
Macintosh-based files (.hqx, .bin, or .sea)
If a file is Macintosh based, it has an .hqx or .bin extension. An .hqx file is a BinHex 4.0 text-formatted file, and a .bin file is a MacBinary formatted file.
From Adobe website:
Compatibility Test for .bin Files
System requirements
Apple Mac OS (any version)
When downloading a file from the Internet, you may be given a choice between two different file formats. One file may end in ".bin," and the other file may end in ".hqx."
The .bin file will download faster but is less compatible with older systems. While .hqx files take longer to download, this format is more compatible with older systems.
Download the Compatibility Test for .bin Files (bintest.bin) to determine whether you can successfully download .bin files.

Ah, I think I'm getting somewhere. I found this which seems to clarify things some.
On PC's ".bin" is the extension for cd images, but MACs also use ".bin" extensions like .exe in PC's or archive like .zip in PC's. The idea is if the file is huge (hundreds of MB) it's probably a cd image. Otherwise it might be a MAC binary file."
Still working on finding a way to open the files so I can load the game though.

Read your above quote again. You either burn to cd (properly) or mount as a disc image.
I'll ask the person who made it to give me instructions I can post here.

I got it figured out.
You have to download special software ( I used Daemon Tools) to create a "virtual cd burner" that will recognize and open the .bin file. Most standard CD burning software isn't capable of this (I tried mine.)
Anyway, you have to go into BIOS and reconfigure your devices to "add" another CD rom drive, even though you're not actually doing that.
Then you mount the .bin file using your "virtual" cd rom (in my case named the E: drive) and then you are able to open the .bin file and read the contents.
If you're not familiar with .bin and this special software it can be pretty confusing.
But anyway, give me the Quake 2 server info so I can play! π―
