Sniper server traffic vanish

I want to recall attention about this.

Server and Forum web page need to be updated as soon as possible.

In server I think we need new maps, deleting bad maps, close kill mod modify, new signs and warnings advises, new sound for rifle gunfire, new scope, etc.

Reasons: People lost interest in us. Good snipers gone to play other servers. We only atract the rest of the wave and a few loyals....

Forum web page is a similar thing: we need to fix problems and modify old information. We need to write the rules, etc and etc.

Respect Tommy I request him respectfully that he thinks about this.

He need to address more serious effort and support over the sniper server and the forum web page.

Perhaps he should delegate tasks.

If Tommy needs support, I am ready to help and to be employed at the server. I believe that there are others members who can help to work in the web page.

Otherwise, we will roll downhill....

We need to have the HideNpeek mod on the server too.

Players are now invissible sometimes when they peek behind some textures.

I have also made Sniper Rules that are based on the FN camping sniper rules.

With all the do's and dont's in it.

This way we will never hear the excuse: "it isn't in the rules" again.

It is on the server, but I think something is causing it to not function properly, more on this later.

That's fine. Awhile back I realized that many of you felt strongly about this. Since it was taking me forever to get going with it I offered, both in a post here and during the last clan meeting, to give someone access to the server for the purposes of changing the maps. Zero people offered to do this. What a surprise. This week, after what I discuss below is finished, I will add a bunch of new maps to the server. Then I will start a thread that will be the only thread for discussing maps. In that thread we can discuss which maps are to be removed, etc.

It's a waste of time discussing this since we all know I am not going to. Fuck all of these other reasons for the server traffic, the No Close Kill mut is what killed the server. Traffic dropped off steadily right after it was added. Fuck, I don't even like playing with it. TBH, I would love to remove it and return that server to it's former glory, but I know some of you would cry and rather see the server perish. The server ran for like 6 - 7 years without that mutator and was very heavy traffic. The mut goes on and the traffic takes a shit, and the offered solution is to make the mut even more restrictive? Fuck. Say we got back up to 20 people on the server all the time. With the increased restriction where the fuck would people stand to frag? Only the biggest maps would work. This is a total failure in reasoning.

People in part lost interest in a 15 year old game and in part left because the server changed so much it is no longer the old DOU server that people loved to play on. As for everyone going somewhere else, anyone have any proof of that? Just show me please.

Yeah, well the web site was being maintained by someone else who is no longer around. I don't know anything really about the current setup either. It looks like I will at some point have to start over and build up a completely new install. Yeah, a lot of work.

That said, here is what is happening.

Wabbit and I worked on the server again tonight (Read: Wabbit worked on the server again tonight). We are within a day or 2 of having a server re-start solution installed. Early tests are promising but a few more kinks need to be worked out. We needed a new solution when we switched to windows from linux.

Next, we have 3 mutators that all track player positions; They are the no close kill, the phoenix mut, and the hide and peek mut. After pouring through the logs, I strongly suspect that these muts are conflicting with each other. I am going to remove phoenix and hide and peek and see if things improve. If so I will add one and see...in other words I will troubleshoot the situation and see if we can figure out what is causing the crashes.

If there are still a few of you I haven't pissed off with this thread, let me make one more attempt here.

I will make sure the re-start works great (for all the UT99 servers). I will make sure the map selection is where you all want it. I will do whatever else you want that is reasonable. But if the traffic doesn't pick up I am going to remove the no close kill mut and see if that makes a difference. Someone is going to prove someone wrong here.

I will post again after we get the re-start up and running.

Glad you noticed the HideNpeek mod doesnt really work yet. As in comparising, I rather would see the HideNpeek mod working properly instead of the NoCloseKill mod.

As for the NoCloseKill, for me its fine the way it is set at this moment. Thought we discussed and agreed on the fact we would drop the NoCloseKill temporarely to see if there will be some positive effects on getting more traffic to the server again.

Just give it a go and we will see. We will have to warn and kick players for close kills again, but that wont be a problem for me. It wasnt a problem in the past either, just a bit more work. I can live with it.

To bring back people to the camping server, I propose an easy fix. Since most people I play with on other servers think we have too many rules, but like the fact that we have the best "style" camping server. I would loosen up on all the rules, well, all but three.

Rule one, No spawn killing (protected by mod)

Rule two, no cheats (protected somewhat by ACE)

Rule three, NoCloseKill

Any-other rules...clear them out...clear and simple

I know the NoCloseKill mod gets your thong in a bunch, but its the only thing that separates the DOU camping server from every other server out there, without the NoCloseKill mod we just become a FUN or HOF freestyle server. I would add 10 feet or 5 meters to the current kill zone and then leave it alone. Any or all kills thereafter are legal kills no matter where from. We will no longer need to fuss over "he said"-"he said". Actually we may no longer need an admin or spectators after this adjustment.

Running and gunning will be allowed since (they just make better targets anyway). The smart players will camp and shoot the runners like fish in a barrel.

You can un-ban anyone who has been here in the past and invite them all back to play. (unless they had a cheat installed).

IMO the rules are okay and we don't need to change them.

DOU server is perceived by real campers as a sniping stronghold, where you can meet nice people and check your sniping skills.

Sniper server traffic vanishes because of four reasones:

1. Some members of our clan has replaced their interests with COD or other games.

2. Offer of maps is not changed for a long time.

3. Recently the server crashes too much often.

4. I know, that it will sound a little bit immodestly 😳 For last three years the most traffic was generated by me. Early this year I started new job and currently I don't have enough much time to play. If you will look at statistics on [link2]gametracker, http://www.gametracker.com/server_info/173.45.74.2:7777/top_players/?query=rad&Search=Search [/link2], you will see that I have played on the server in total almost 4000 hrs (as {DOU}_Rad - 2919,7; as {DOU-r}_Rad - 413,93 and as Rad (independent player) - 641,62) and this is the best score - people were coming to play mostly for me :mrgreen:
