Volkswagon Beetle PSA

My sweetie has one of these POS cars.

We're barely hanging on as it is and now we have to shell out over $550 because of a defective water pump and a shot thermostat. These fucking bugs are extremely poorly designed piles of rolling junk.

They shoot horses don't they ?

Sounds like, from what I read, your problems are just begining. I'd think hard about getting out from under it before it costs you several thousand dollars more you'll never get the benefit of.

You may not be able to afford a new car but you also may not be able to afford the one you have.

Repair it and trade it in quick !

Trying to convince her to sell it and get something more reliable.

I drive a '95 Neon. Four years older than hers and I've put around $110 into it for repairs in the last 3 years. I have some electrical issues with it (common for Neons) but it still gets me where I need to go. But I am going to need a mechanic soon. Head gasket needs replacing. I'm hoping to find someone who does it on the side. Save a couple hundred that way.

Good idea Cyg.

BTW, if you can find a old Toyota Corrola or Camry, they are very reliable. I've owned a lot of cars in my life. At one time owned several at the same time. The Toyotas were always very low maintenance and seldom if ever needed anything repaired. The tend to carry a higher blue book value for that reason but IMO they are a good investment. Time has a value too. Being broke down on the roadside when you're supposed to be at work has a cost. No substitute for solid transportation.

I've always had good luck buying out of the AutoTrader. Purchased several cars that way. I got them all with low milage and in good shape. I only buy cars that look like they have been taken care of inside as well as under the hood where it counts. I won't buy from someone that doesn't keep their maintenance records, shows they don't care.

Water pump??? Some cars which you need to replace the serpentine belt you would need to replace the water pump as well... They make oil filters why don't they make water filters???

Any parts rubbing against each other are subjected to wear one way or another even erosion and heat depending on the materials used.

What is considered a normal repair or replacement on a car?

Rotate/replace tires?

Replace oil and spark plugs?

Replace break pads?

Replace wiper blades?

Replace rear-view mirror?

Replace factory stereo? Because 12 inches and 500 Watts is cooler?

Replace Battery?

People put alot of miles on cars and don't realize that it needs a few simple things.

In your case it should have been a simple recall for a replacement part.

This is a bit more than standard maintennance. The dolt that engineered this POS made it so the timing belt had to be removed to replace the water pump. Doesn't live up to the vaunted reputation of German engineering.
