This topic started in another one, but seemed to go off-topic. So here's the new thread.
Otis_Firefly wrote: [quote={DOU}_Cygnus_X_1][quote=Otis_Firefly]Just a question - - - how long are we getting to know people before we accept them as a recruit?
That's pretty much a judgement call.
I wouldn't mind setting up a short review period to give members a chance to voice any reasons why we shouldn't accept an application. The main issue in doing this would be deciding what would be an acceptable reason for refusing an application. Behavioral and anti-social issues should definitely be considered but in the case of how long we are getting to know a potential recruit? That can get kinda sticky. Aussies for example are usually on the server in th early a.m. Eastern when just about all of us are not around. Do we refuse them based on that?
Like I said - just a question. Obviously if someone is playing on the server someone has had to of seen them at some point. But I wonder if say Joefragger comes to DOU and tools around for two weeks then decides he wants to join - is his application approved?
This guy in question has spent less than 1 hour total on our server and was last seen 7 days ago.
I think there are no problems at the moment with recruiting. So why change something that seems to work out fine? But I understand the question raised by Otis however. If one plays for a hour and thinks he likes the game and server, can he participate immediately as a recruit?
We do pick up recruits ourselves if we see someone who plays by the rules and is at our server frequently. In that case we know a little bit more about a person and know a bit what we can expect. In those cases we invite players to our forum and ask them to fill in an application if they’re interested. A short review period sounds oké, but isn’t that’s what the whole recruit period already is all about?
A little brainstorming here…
Why don’t we use the guest skin in another way as we do now? Isn't it a little strange to look at players that are banned or very unwelcome on our server, seeing them play in our guest skin! I wouldn’t define some of those players as our guests! It’s a little in conflict isn’t it?
Maybe it’s an idea to let them play in our guest skin when they have made it to the forum. In this way we have a short review period. Then the 3 months recruiting period and finally the member skin when voted in.
Guest – Recruit – Member
Looks quiet more practical to me.

Player-Guest-Recruit-Member
Natan i like your idea, but the only flaw is that we have a lot people who come on and complain about the skins being to dark. This is agrivating enough, but we do have a guest skin so we can shut them up by telling them to download the darker guest skin if they want. If we were to take away the guest skin from guests these players would go on and on about it. Also... many players already have the guest skin, so if we were to take it off many players who do not have the skin would start to complain about why some guests can have it but others cant (despite how they play)
If we can take the skins from the current guests and rename our guest skin and place on the newly named skin back on the server and onto the forum for guests who camp well.
I think the greatest pro in this idea, would be if we could get all our camper guests to wear the skin while keepig the r&g players in the default skin we could quickly tell the difference between who camps and who does not.
Also... on another unrelated idea.
When is E=me2 going to have his vote. I think he has been a recruit for quite some time now.
Cyg's note: E=mc2 became a recruit the beginning of May so will be voted on Early August.
i only see one small problem here how do you stop the run and gunners from wearing the 'new' guest skin ???? Guess we could make a guest camping skin and a guest run and gun skin that might work...

I like your idea there DM.
Another thing:
How can we know if the guest asking to be a recruit is not a bad player, a bad person or someone already been refused?
Just a thought
I have always thought we were a little too eager to ask people to join before really getting the opportunity to know them first. I'm not sure a criteria needs to be established for exactly how long someone should have to play here to be considered, but I do believe asking someone their first week on our server to join is a little premature.
What's the hurry ? I'd like to think quality is more important than quantity here. If they leave the server and go somewhere else to play then guess what.... they didn't like it here that much and are not any better fit with us than we are with them. Not everyone is going to fit in here. There's nothing wrong with that, is there ?
Also, Rev is right about people complaining about our dark skins. This is why we had a guest skin made available in the first place. People would come into the server and immediately start ranting about not being able to find us in those dark skins, why do we have to play like that, it's not fair, blah blah blah.

Well as far as skins go - we have a guest, a recruit and a members skin. I could care less about any of them or who wears them to be honest. If someone doesn't like the dark skins tell them to join the military and try to snipe their enemy in dayglow pink. They'll get what they deserve.
Anyway - I just think a guest should spend more than 20 hours on the server before an application is accepted. Thats all. I think it would lead to less heartache in the long run.

That's not a bad idea at all maybe a 20 Hr. minimum to apply. I'm sure I had more hours then that when I applied but It was probably less than 50 and I wasn't sure I had enough time on the server. Simple rule to apply also.

Concete, when you applied you spent a lot of time in vent. That was smart. It gave a lot of the regulars a chance to chat you up and find out what you were all about. For that reason, I think it took less time to get to know you than someone who spends more time on the forum for instance (Not everyone is comfy talking to people in Vent). I think it's harder to hide what you are in Vent for any real amount of time. Example: how long did it take most of you to realize Memetic was a long winded asshole ?
What I'm saying is a flat rule may work for some but not all depending on where they put in the time.

😆
How many ppl do we need to be considered a gaming-clan? Is fresh BLOOD good?
Which direction do we need to grow??? There are many games out there! Are we recruiting ppl for just UT99???
Who plays Quake 2 anymore?
Has anyone kept a Descent 3 server running??? - off topic.

Allright...gave this some consideration and although the 20 hour minimun does have merit I don't have the time to check on every recruit as to how long they've been playing on our server. You also have to consider that there may be time spent on the forum or on Ventrilo. It wouldn't be fair to judge every potential recruit soley based on how much time has been spent in server.
Instead I will present each application as I have been but I will let the potential recruit know that it is under review for acceptance. This will allow some clan discussion to present issues, if any, concerning the applicant. Should it be felt by most people that the applicant hasn't been around DOU enough, I can then inform him or her that their application is on hold and they need to spend more time around DOU before it'll be considered.
And if it turns out the application is bogus or if the person is a major problem already we'll have the option to refuse them.
Fair enough?
Sounds good to me Cyg.

Yes... Remember, we are supposed to create a topic for discussion before we approach a person and offer recruitment. this way we can all see what's up and find out if someone knows something the possible recruit doesn't.

Actually this is more to do with how we are dealing with the people who are applying on their own.
But you are correct that if someone thinks somebody would make a good DOU it should be brought up for discussion first.
Regarding people who have applied here on their own, sounds good Cyg.
