IMO a punishment now wouldn't serve the situation much. He knows he screwed up and he knows he'll be watched intently as well when he's let back on the server.
I say skip the 30 day in this case but make sure he knows that there will be no tolerance and no more chances. He should also be reminded that should someone break the rules against him on the server that he should not retaliate. Let an admin know and let the admin handle it.
I'd also like to say to the admins that if they see Gut do something, be sure it's blatant and not a knee-jerk reaction or something incidental. We all get into those situations from time to time. Lets use good judgement and try to as fair as possible.
