I really think it is time to install the mod that takes health if you run and you regain it if you camp.

It's called the "Nobody Will Want To Play On That Server" mod.

I agree with Tommy on this one.
I've never played a server with it, but I have read a lot of bitching by people that have. It would do more to kill the server than the offender. :gib: Now, if you could come up with the same mod for the non-stop hunters.... :peace_v:

II agree with Tommy. We just need to watch the server against such players. We have such possibilities as kicking from the server or ban. Restriction of movement really discourages the game. I usually try to camp and I avoid such servers with limited movement.
You can stick that idea right back up your ass minky, and leave it there!
And why is this in the hall if shame??!!
Mr_head wrote: And why is this in the hall if shame??!!
My guess is because suggesting such a mod is shameful.

So I have moved this to security issues as it seemed to be the most appropriate of the choices presented.

So, here we go again. This comes to a head every couple of years and then I need to re-explain the way it all works.
We don't need to add mods to the server. As a matter of fact I still believe we would be better off without the close kill mod too.
Here is the deal. Most of you reading this are admins (or want to be / will at some point be). So...be admins. The point is that you guys need to do the work. Rather than put all these different mods on the server or go ape-shit with the 30-day bans, admin the server. I understand that it is a hassle and takes away from playing...but you guys did want to be admins. You did want to be in DOU. You do want a lot of people on the server. The admin privilege comes with responsibility. We need to admin the server but be as patient with players as possible. The idea is to try to guide people to play as they should and we want them too, without being too heavy-handed about it. Banning people should be a last resort, not something that is done because we lose our shit. Sometimes it is necessary, yes, but only in extreme circumstances.
Throw out some scenarios and I will tell you how I would handle it. Or tell me what you guys have done in the past. Remember, I have been doing this for damn near 15 years. I sucked at it, bu learned a lot over the years. More than anything else...patience.

Can we run a sister server as an experiment? Leave our standard sniper server up, then along side it run the "modded" server, the no run mod, remove close kill and the shit people moan about, and then just watch the figures.
When the server was being heavily used on a daily bases we had a couple of regular admins throughout the day and as timezones shift others would take their place, the drop in players has also caused a drop in admins playing or paying attention, i admit im one of them as is tommy!, so the people who are still playing regular need to get on it more, give the us the information and maybe itll pry some older players back out the woodwork, darkmatter??!! Ha,
All full members have the right to police the server to a degree, its only recruits who are limited, everyone should be on the forum having their say, unfortunately i already know that only 3 maybe 4 members at a push will even read any of this.
I think I still Admin the server at a high level, but I have to say I sometimes feel like I'm the only one doing so. I know it's frustrating when your in a game and doing great and have to leave the game because of Admin duties. But at one point in time you have signed up to be an Admin, so that's what you should do.
I agree we should be careful with any kind of bans, that's why I've cleaned up the RSA. I think it's necessary to warn more and kick more often when players aren't acting according to our rules. On the other hand, we always need to be very patient with new guests. We don't want to scare them away to other servers. Kicking them for one game should get their attention. I don't think we had any bans in 2017.
The idea of a sister server as Mr_head proposed also has crossed my mind, but I think it will split our server traffic resulting in a lower rank at Gametracker. I don't think this is what we want. But it's still an option, we would be our own competitor in a best-case scenario. (a high rank on GT leads to more traffic on our server).
About mods. It would be best to have as least as possible. The no close kill, however, is still a good one in my opinion. Before we had the mod we always got questions like how close is to close for a fair shot. That one is difficult to answer. With the no close kill mod any kill out of reach of the mod is fair in my opinion so that saves a lot of hassle.
So about the no run mod. It's a very bad idea and most of us agree with that. I won't solve anything.
Just Admin the server as you're appointed to and be patient.
This is something I've thought about for awhile and you guys can tell me what I'm missing here -- on the "no close kill" mod, I think a lot of the bitching comes from the fact that you can still hear the shooter's gun even when they are outside of the mod. Scenario: guy appears on a ledge right below where you have been camping and he's just outside the mod, fair shot, hears the gun and cries foul. Also, usually this type has been hunting the map non-stop or would gladly revenge if they could pull it off. Consistently breaking two server rules, but whining when they get clipped for something that was technically legal.
This is in nerd territory, so I don't know the answer to this -- can you tweak settings to where you can hear a shooters gun at only a certain distance? I think that would clear up a lot of the close kill bitching (close kills that aren't actually assaults), the ones that people hear but they never see. Just outside the mod, can't hear the gun. Is it doable? If not, the only other way I can think of to accomplish that is to increase the close kill distance by a few feet.

I've been at this about two weeks now and am glad to do it. Being so new at this I'm treading carefully. I don't mind doing it and I actually find it pretty interesting being able to see things on the other side of the curtain, though I'm sure eventually the shine will wear off. It's a real eye opener.
Most evenings (EST) I am on for a few hours while I mill around before going in for the night. On those nights when I can't play because I have to sit here and do stuff, it's at least easy to watch the RSA. I'm not reading line-by-line for three hours straight, but I catch a lot. Some of it I miss because by the time I see a complaint, get geared up to spectate, and get in the game, the complaining players have run off the offender, but at least now I have a better idea who to watch for the next time they come back.
From the first day I started keeping an IP list. It's already up to about 120 names and I'd say a good 40% are ones I've never seen before. Just interesting trivia that you can probably see on some other stat list anyway. I'm not multilingual, so I've got a sheet with a standard warning made up in about six different languages. I already know who a lot of the trouble players are and if they're new to me, I add a note so the next time I look them up I can see quick what they're like.
So, you want a scenario? Here's the one everybody is afraid to touch. Bite_Me. I would say nobody in-game gets bitched about more than him when he's not around. Our two most recent recruits even made comments on their recruitment forms. When he comes on, wins the first game, and then out-votes everyone on each successive game he can pick his favorite "shooting fish in a barrel maps" you see players steadily drop off out of frustration. That itself is not an offense, you but you know how he gets there.
He complained against my recruit the other night so that gave me reason to come on and spectate them both. Some maps he "camps", like Train Station, because that's the safest place to be, but on Savage where I spectated him, it's just as I suspected for years because he'll shoot me in the corner behind the trash can then as soon as I respawn, I'm getting shot on the opposite side of the room behind the bookcase. Impossible to do from one position and that can happen three or four times in a row. He never stops moving, not just shifting around in-place, but changing locations all over the map. It was incredible to watch and I think it happened because he didn't know I could do it. When other known admins come in mid-game, I have actually seen his style change until they leave.
So, are there rules for him and rules for us? I know he's not the only one and I deal with them, but you know the difference here. You can tell me to call him out on it when I see it, but I can already predict the firestorm that's coming after he's been allowed to run around for years with nothing being said and then the newly minted admin steps in. So, it's not so much how would you handle it (unless you're going to handle it) -- it's how would you want someone in my position to handle it if at all?
Actually, it's quite simple and we don't have to make it any more complicated than it is. If I come in as a spectator/admin he's always behaving, but that's because he knows he's being watched.
If you see him run all over the map give him a warning. He will most likely feel attacked. Just like I warned Balony last week about running all over the map. He (Balony) completely in denial and bringing up all kind of reasons why he had to move around as he did. They don't like it at all when they get caught.
As for Bite_Me just warn him and kick him when you have to. He will bitch at you, but that's his problem, not yours.
Tommy, I know there is a mutator on the RSA named HiddenAdmin. It's not in use. Can I activate it at some moments and after using it set it back to normal?
