Stuff Understood

Wabbit explained to me the other night some things that I never knew about banning people that will make it much easier to do so now.

It is good to know how to do something, but better to understand exactly what it is that you are doing.

From this point on I should have a lot less trouble getting rid of the assholes.

I will explain this for the benefit of those reading this.

Someones I.P. is: 23.254.58.213 (completely made up I.P., just hit numbers)

Each section seperated by a period is called an "Octet." (Thanks for the name _J).

When we put a /# after it, it tells the router or whatever how many octets to look at. These are in multiples of 8.

Thus, if I do a:

23.254.58.213/8

Then all I.P's in the 23.254.58.* range will be banned.

If I do a:

23.254.58.213/16

Then all I.P's in 23.254.*.* Will be banned.

If I do 23.254.58.213/24

Then 23.*.*.* will be banned.

If you are understanding this, then you know if I do:

23.254.58.213/32

Then *.*.*.* will be banned, at which point after I hit save, I will have to call the data center and tell then that I just banned the entire internet and lost access so that they can charge me 100 dollars to remove the line from my routers ban file.

Easy peasy (don't bother R Mad, it's a made up word, the translator will smoke). So now when we need to ban these fucks I can just throw a /8 at them, and if that doesn't work, a /16.

Obviously, this can very easily be abused, so I will continue to be the only one doing this.

From this point on, when someone see's the SS guys or memetic on the server, they need to create a post in this format:

[BAN REQUEST] blah blah blah

Just make sure the [BAN REQUEST] is in the subject line, then I will give it my prompt attention. Find what these guys are using now and I will deal with it. This format is only for people who we already know we need to ban. Just create regular threads for people we need to discuss. If we do this, the SS guys and Memetic can be gone before the weekend comes. 🙂

What I mean by giving it my prompt attention is this... people use the security area to vent some steam all the time when something pisses them off, often minor stuff that doesn't warrant an investigation by me, at least not right away. As such, I will admit that I do not always read every thread in this area.

I will read and respond to the ones formatted as suggested above, at least until someone starts to abuse this process.

Excellent T 8)

To clarify, when you say Ban request Blah Blah Balah, you mean title the thread Ban Request and then in the thread post the name, date, time, and map where they were seen, right ?

Yeah, and I.P. if you got it. But if you are timely enough digging through the logs won't be too difficult. Say you see Memetic and make a post, title the post like this:

[BAN REQUEST] Memetic

Actually, anything after the bracketed part is fine. Make it so that others can post more info in the thread.

Gabeesh?

O.K., just talked to _J about this.

Disregard what I said above. It is correct but it isn't. It got a lot more confusing. I need to research this further.

Regardless, the proxy (AnchorFree) that the SS guys have been using is now banned from all of our game servers. It is not yet banned from the forum so we can see how effective we are. The more effective we are, the more vocal they will be.

Memetic is on deck.

Keep your eyes out for these guys now. It is very important to identify them every time they get on somehow.

Most are simple, slow, limited web proxies. It's the better commercial proxies we want to get rid of.

The entire IP range of the server, yes. That is what I did.
