BEWARE ALL- SERIOUS IMPOSTER SIGHTED ON DOU LOX SERVER
I regret in inform you guys that I need to unfortunately post some serious information on a situation that has been discorvered on the DOU LOX server. I am tired as hell right now and might even end up editing these posts a tidbit here or a tidbit there...just for corrections or clarifications. I will do everything I can to facilitate the true identification of this person who has apparrently
HACKED INTO MY GAMING FRIENDS (Xtife's) EMAIL,
ILLEGALLY CREATED AND SENT EMAIL TO ME FROM xTIFE'S ADDRESS
PROCEDES TO IMPERSONATE XTIFE (and others)REGULARLY, to GAIN MY ATTENTION, AND THEN SPREAD LIES AS IF THEY WERE TRUE TO ME OVER THE CONSOLE MESSAGES, asking how did I like the files he sent me, was I using a bot, blah blah.... I've seen seen him, 20mm, Thorn, DUKE, Don'tKillME, Misty Chan, and others have seen this hacker.
To save this from getting too long and boring, I'll start now with what I know so far. Any of the info below can be obtained by DOU admin if they feel it neccesary. Just shoot and email request and I'll send whatever. You might even add some information in your request that only you and me know, that way, I'll feel that much more confident you are who you are. That is how I feel about the whole situation. That might be veryhard to do I know, but it would be kinda cool. I wouldn't doubt if my email was/is/will be hacked some way. If not don't worry about it. And also remember, this is all new to me.

2. Duke recorded a demo of 2 Xtife's on the server at the same time. One is real good, and the other one sux, or, pretends to suck at playing LOX. The real Xtife is has the higher score, obviously. I have this demo.
3. There is also a screenshot I have that Duke emailed me recently that shows how this guy changed his name to BAMA ETHAN and proceeded to somehow flood the server with logons. I have this picture.
4. Anything else I have yall want, let me know. I have a condump that, unfortunatley didnt contain much of the hackers messages to all...but it got some at the end and got me saying f*ck yu at the end...hehe I have the condump, from Duke, that goes with the demo as well.
My last thoughts at this monent is that I ask all of DOU to please understand that this kind of behavior is not within the spirit and gamemanship that the Bringers of Death stand for. Someone is trying to mess up our team so please understand we are not [shoudn't be] like that... I want everybody to come together and stamp out this sorry son of a bit*h whoever he is... I do not bot. BOD is not supposed to stand for people who bot, impersonate, or otherwise hack or interfere with others. I have never botted in my life. I will never bot. I am above that. Point Blank. The way I feel is... If you cheat, you are a sorry person. We will rise above this hacker. He doesn't realize it yet, but at this point, he is simply a tool that I am using to laugh at now.
I like Clan DOU. BOD likes Clan DOU as well! It may seem I talk negative of the server at times... not my true feelings!...:)....this is just because I am kinda pissed/shocked/serious at the moment I posted a few thoughts. This should pass and we'll all be wiser and can laugh at this dumb shit soon. Screw this guy.

First, as for 2 and 3, did this happen on the DOU server? If so can you give me a date? IT's almost impossible to look anything up in a log without an idea of when it happened.
Next, some good news and some bad news.
The good news is that we have begun to actively work on figuring out the name/skin change issues. We have turned on more logging of server activities to try and catch more errors. I am going to consider this part of your complaint dealt with simply because we will continue to work on it until it is resolved. X7 and Snake will be keeping an eye on the logs and will figure something out, I am sure, as I have complete confidence in their abilities to do so. If necessary I will also ask QwazyWabbit to look into it. Now, the next time this happens to anyone it would help greatly if they would take a condump and post the revelant information over in the Quake 2 LOX area (This area is for complaints only, not bug reports).

This wasn't the beginning of it nor was it the end of it, but it does include all that you were talking about.
As you can see from the log, the I.P. does match up so it was in fact Xtife that was on the server at the time. I really didn't want to post that above log but it is Clan DOU policy to openly and publically respond to all complaints and then preserve the complaint so that others can see that we do deal with all complaints and that we do so in a fair and honest manner.
I removed all I.P.'s from the log, replacing them with x's since some people may not wish for their address to be displayed. I left Xtifes in to show that it was in fact him thinking that since he runs a public listen server anyway his i.p. address is known. I also removed "heartbeat" comments since they contained I.P. addresses. Last, I removed a few lines from scripted say commands since they will not paste in here without jumbling up the text to an un-readable level.
Obviously you and Xtife have some things to work out, and should do so privately. You 2 had some serious exchanges going about bot usage, but q2admin did not catch any actual activity so I am not prepared to ban anyone just now. Unless you feel that there is something else to this part of the complaint that needs to be resolved, I will consider it resolved as well.
I will leave this thread open for 2 days in case you still wish to address the #2 and #3 from the above post. I am willing to bet it is related to the above though. If there is nothing new within 2 days I will lock this thread.

We've known that he used Xtife's IP to connect to your server. I think Duke and Xtife both have somehow understood this. (technically, I guess) Unless I am missing something, I believe we need to quickly realize this first. At the BOD forum link above, we see that Xtife acknowleges this also:

I just cannot beleive that Xtife is banning himself. That does not compute. Think about that for a second........ He chose to ban ...himself? I see clearly this imposter's scheme of setting Xtife up. The faked whining of needing to quit LOX, the direct lies and childishness, and the lameness of this hacker fuck, does not at all tie in with my friend Xtife who has given his time to help me and BOD from the very begining of BOD. As we all know, he recently submitted new skins for BOD, has helped many of us with real, normal game stuff, and has been an overall great guy since the day I met him.
Since the server apparently accepts more than one of the same IP, that was really this peice of shit hacker's ace in the hole. That's the weakest link, (in my unexperienced but common sense opinion.) That does not mean I feel as if it should have been set differently all along... I mean, yes, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of mishaps but I mean come on..even I realize that all this is computer shit...You can't cover all bases at once all the time.... Just maybe now it might need to be set to allow only one of the same IP on at a time. I have no idea if this can be set or not. I thoroughly understand that monitoring a server can be intensive time consuming work. I heartily applaud all you guys for your efforts in that dept. In the end you, are what really makes our fragging fun last on cool servers.
Now. The demo of them both at the same time. How could Xtife be playing against himself?... from the same IP?. I am totally open to any real answers to that. I just don't know.

I'm going to read your post in further detail in a few minutes but wanted to say something first, that will cut to the heart of the matter.
Yes, someone can hack somone elses computer, yes someone can steal files, but spoofing an IP is another matter completely. Your typical script kiddie cannot do this. You would ned to be an expert with the quake 2 code, your OS, networking, and tcp/ip.
For this to have been spoofed to beat my logs, the person would have had to grab the quake 2 source code, re-write it with extra functions for the spoofing (and even then it wouldn't be 100%), test it for a very long time, and then get the client past q2admin. Not very likely.
What is more likely is that someone for whatever reason acted like an ass on the server one night and now does not want to own up to it.

I am posting this after it was called to my attention by Tommy.
If the log says it was Xtife's IP, then it was Xtife.
It is possible to send unconnected commands to the server but not without the rcon password and they would show up as rcon commands in the log with the IP addresss logged in them as well. It is not possible to connect to a quake2 server from a spoofed IP.
It is perfectly possible to connect two clients from the same IP address to a Q2 server and I have even done it from the same computer. It is possible to have the same name, same IP and be connected with two different computers and it will show up as the same IP address because the IP address that the server sees is the WAN IP address of the server. The only limit on the number of simultaneous connections from the same IP address is the number of allowed players on the server.
As for hacking email and impersonation there:
You can examine the email headers of a suspect message and see if the IP address of the SMTP servers are the same as a known "good" email. Compare the IP address of the sending client as well, this will be the nail in the coffin.
The critical ones are the top Recieved: line this is the server that delivered the message to your email server. The second critical line is the bottom Received: line. This one tells you who started the email at the other end.
Example:
Received: from lsanca1-ar18-24-33-188-025.lsanca1.elnk.dsl.genuity.net ([24.33.188.25] helo=localhost) by pop-a065d19.pas.sa.earthlink.net with esmtp (Exim 3.36 #10) id 1DXN37-00013S-00-00XX
This shows the originating IP address of the email to be 24.33.188.25. This cannot be forged unless one has control of the pop-a065d19.pas.sa.earthlink.net server. There are other signs in the email headers that can disclose whether an email came from the same user/client that I won't go into here.

P.S. I was wrong. I looked at the code and the limit on clients from the same IP address on an r1q2 server is 3. The admin can set this higher or lower with a command, but the default value is 3.

I can't delete this as it is DOU policy not to, though I also hope it fades away rather quickly. This was not pleasant for anyone involved.
I thought about it and decided that the level of trouble this guy caused was enough to justify a ban and have done so. He can appeal that ban here if he wishes but it will take something impressive for me to change my mind.
And don't worry about it, you were just trying to go to bat for a fellow clan-mate who was snowing you the whole time, the fault was his.

The last issue of the complaint was the name/skin changing issue.
We have identified the most likely reason for this and are working on a fix for it. It would appear to be q2admin at fault. There are a few things we can do and I am sure one of them will take care of it.
Since that issue is more of a bug issue then a complaint issue anything further should be posted in the Quake 2 area.
With that said, I am going to call this complaint resolved and lock the thread.
Special thanks go to X7, Snake, Wizkid, and QwazyWabbit who all gave valuable input which allowed me to fully determine what was going on. It was very much appreciated.
