Those of you who enjoy reading about military strategy should look this up.
I read a book a long time ago about this assault up Cemetary Ridge at Gettyburg. It's is a perfect example of the reason why maintaining the high ground and is so important during combat. Robert E Lee ordered Gen Pickett up that ridge (only about 40' high) and his men were slaughtered primarily due to their poor line of assault.
If I recall, there was another path to the top of Cemetary Ridge that would have taken a lot longer to achieve but Lee refused anything other than the direct approach straight up the hill -maybe due in part that it was already into the 3rd day of battle at Gettysburg. It seems that impatience defeated Lee as well.
