For some strange reason that I can't possibly fathom at the moment... I want to do this.

Sadly the endless building regulations would make it nearly impossible to build in the U.S.

Hence the name "Bag End".... you didn't read the books, did you?

Frodo's uncle was Bilbo Baggins, he lived in Bag End. That's the house where Frodo and Gandalf discussed the Ring and begin the quest to destroy it.

A very nice reproduction.

Hobbiton was built in New Zealand for the movies but I am not sure it still exists. I don't know how much of it was special effects. They don't work as well in real life. πŸ™‚

Another nice thing is having a wife who is willing to put up with a lot of roughing it for a project like that. From the text it looks like she's the one who put the web site together. Nice teamwork.

Bag End was also mentioned in the film.

Thanks, I wasn't sure they named Bag End. I suppose Gandalf, Frodo and Sam all spoke the name but it got lost in my memory of the action in the film. I know they talked about going back to the Shire. It's been a while. πŸ™‚

FWIW, my brother and I read the story when we were 12 or 13. I really didn't like it very much. I never did finish it back then but he loved it. I took up the books again (I still had our old paperbacks) and reread the trilogy and The Hobbit before seeing the movies. Highly recommended.

I have them as well as the Silmarillion and many other works that were finished by the younger Tolkien.

The Silmarillion covers the First Age of Middle Earth and it is definitely worth picking up. The beginning of the book is about the "creation" of Middle Earth and it does put some people off. If it does, just skip that part and read the rest. Lots of good stories in there.
