A billboard that just went up south of here on Route 51 isn't part of the promotional effort. It's a digitally altered depiction of a dog being yanked by a hook in its mouth.

I do agree that PETA goes a bit far sometimes, and this is one of those cases. I've heard of this billboard before. Man has been fishing since the dawn of time, and this is the way to do it. I think things like fish farms are far more cruel than a hook. At least before being caught the fish gets to live a normal life.

However, without PETA there would be far more animal cruelty then there is now, not that there still isn't a lot.

I actually used to work with a guy a few years ago (maybe 3 years ago) that told what he considered to be an amusing story about how this litter of kittens wandered into his yard while he was out enjoying a few beers. He got out a fishing pole and one by one hooked the kittens (with a real steel hook) reeled them in, and then beat them to death once he pulled them in.

In just thinking about that story alone, I feel that organizations like PETA are very necessary. Do they go a bit over-board sometimes, sure, but the cost in animal cruelty would be much higher without them around.

Suffice it to say there are a lot of scumbags in this world, both on the left and the right.

People like the kitty fisherman should recieve prison time and psychological counseling. Unfortunately, PETA has little or nothing to do with individual cases of sadism such as that. They do spend a large amount of their resources trying to get laws passed to make fishing, hunting, wearing or eating any animal product a crime. PETA also supports organizations such as the Animal Liberation Front which aren't shy about using any tactic short of murder to further their goals.

I will admit PETA has done some good. Like getting some of these cosmetic companies to quit using animals for testing their products.

But I also believe they've done much more harm than good. They continuously assail the rights of sportsmen and farmers throughout this land as well as other parts of the world. Yes, when it comes to farming, alot of animals have a pretty sad existance when judged against our own freedoms. But hey, that's been a part of life ever since man learned to domesticate animals. Organizations like PETA would have the same rights expected by humans extended to all animals. That is their ultimate goal.

I cannot and will not ever sympathize with that point of view.

There is a movement under way to revoke PETA's tax-exempt status.
