I admit I haven't researched further from just looking at this. Is it just me, or does it appear to be at least one huge hole in the earth?

I don't know guys.. that stuff's just too far out there. That one dark area that appears so much like a huge hole really seems like that's what you might fall in if you were cast into hell, lol.

Pretty close to hell, anyway. That's the Nevada Test Site. Thar's where they tested the nukes back in the 50's thru 70's before they finally banned underground nuke tests.
The object with the nice star pattern is a mock SAM site or AA battery. Lots of bomb craters around there indicating it's a live-fire range for testing weps or maybe testing the pilots out of Nellis. If you go east a bit, just before you come to Area 51 you can see the craters and marks from the nuke tests.
