Jarg, having been middle management for 20 years now I know how you feel. Just remember that when some A-hole gets on your nerves you have the power to hit him where it hurts most...the wallet. 😈

As for you statement haunting you I hope not. Once while resigning I told my director "One day it will be legal to kill people, at 12:01 am your dead." Two years later the same Corp. bought my new company even after that statement I was one of two out of 14 managers that did not get canned the day of the sale. That was 8 years ago I'm still there.
Just keep in mind that you were chosen for your skills and past record. If they didn't think you had the right stuff you would not be there. While you do need to learn to be politicaly correct, while doing so you will learn much more devious ways to take care of problems.

As for being "P.C.", I have always struggled with that. Do not get me wrong, I do not discriminate against anyone for any reason. I am a huge fan of diversity.
