The cyber pirates hitting Estonia

It sounds like Estonia is being hit hard. That aside, we all have to deal with this bullshit on a regular basis.

I firmly believe that if our elected officials did something, spam, phishing, denial of service attacks, even viruses, would be drastically cut down to manageable levels.

This is yet another example of how our government(s) fail us. Instead of taking action, we are subjected to weak legislation that further is seldom enforced. One only has to read the U.S. spam laws to see what I mean. Kids get caught all the time writing viruses. What is their punishment? A great job waiting for them after school with a security firm or software developer. The more malacious the virus, the better paying the job.

My idea would be that if someone here in the states were caught doing these activites, that the FBI should march into their homes / businesses and take their computers. Of course there would be numerous lawsuits argueing things like the kids need computers for school or the adults need to run their businesses.

For overseas attacks, all governments should require that other governments work toward enforcing laws in their own countries or risk having their country cut off from access to others. Cut the trunk cables if necessary. But again (of course) the WTO and EU would fire off numerous lawsuits and prevent this from happening.

The truth of this is that spam, phishing, viruses, etc. are profitable enterprises. So long as this is so, nobody will do anything about it.
