I'm currently training for my first 5K run in October. Anyone else run/jog regularly in competitions or just general fitness?

I suppose that running to the fridge for a brew in between games don't count? πŸ˜†

But I do run fast. πŸ˜†

Chicken,

I am currently training for a 10K run next summer. It will be my first. If I do well enough, I plan to do them as often as I can πŸ™‚ Hows your training been going? Any obstacles? I have a few but I am dealing with them (for the most part).

Going great so far. Only issue I have is some bursitis in my right heel. But I'm managing it pretty well thus far with help from my podiatrist.

Other than that I'm making good progress. I'm doing a C25K thru my gym and am going into Week 5 Day 1 tomorrow.

So far I'm up to 2 miles in 20 minutes, which is where I'm supposed to be in the program. I'm really hooked and look forward to running a couple more 5K's this year and them maybe do some 10's next year.

How long have you been running? You must have some decent experience to be training up for a 10K.

What part of the country are you in?

This is a pretty neat running site I've been spending some time in. Seems like nice peeps in the forums. http://www.coolrunning.com

I'm in the South East US right now, and thats part of my problem. I lived most of my life in the North East (New York) where the air is a lot easier to breath. Since moving here I have developed slight asthma. It's not enough to stop me from running, but it does challange my training more. As soon as the colder weather comes i'll be able to breathe easier though.

The second problem is shin splints, I get them bad. What I really need is for someone to give me a deep muscle massage, but unfortunately I can't find anyone in this location qualified to do it (you need special traning and certification to do it). Thats where you actually work the connective tissue between the muscle and bone. So for now I just wear special inserts in my running shoes and I practically buy out the local drug stores supply of ben gay on a weekly basis.

I only started running this year, but I keep plugging away at it and I am making some really good progress. I can run a mile in about 6 minutes, and about 10 minutes average for the full 6.2 miles (6.2 miles = 10k). My goal right now is to average 8 minutes a mile, but thats gonna take some time.

Are you running track in school? Is this what you are talking about? I wanted to run track in HS but I hurt my knee before the season started, and then I just lost interest later. But now I am totally hooked on running and doubt I will stop until I am too old to run.

Next July 4th I am running a 10k in New York. I have no expectations of winning the race, but I think that if I keep training hard and my progress continues, I have a shot at winning in my age category.

Good luck with your first race. I hope you let us know how you do. And if you run into any obstacles while training, post them. I might have a solution or you may be able to let me know how you got past it in case I need to know.

I'm down in Florida on the coast just a little south of Melbourne/Kennedy Space Center area. I'm not in school, I'm 33. Not sure what I said that made you think I was still in school.

I'll definitely let ya know how the 5K goes. Coming up quick!!

Only thing that worries me about it, is that it's a early morning race (7am) and I don't run well in the morning. I say that because we alternate training times and Wednesdays we run at 6:30am and it's twice as hard for me to run at that time, as opposed to late afternoon. I think I've decided it's because I'm dehydrated in the morning and also don't have enough fuel for my muscles as well as not being limber and warmed up. I have been just waking up at 6 and gulping down water and then heading out to meet up with my running partners. I think this Wednesday I'll get up at 4:30am, have a banana and a bagel for fuel and guzzle water while I do a 30 minute warm up walk around my subdivision before I head out for my run. See if that helps. This morning my legs wanted to cramp after 1 mile which never happens in the afternoons.

I don't do any weight lifting (I get bored in the gym) but probably should add some type of resistance training.

If this 5K goes well, there is another one at Disney in Nov. I think that I'll go do as well. We'll see what happens, but I sure feel great after I run (not to mention how good my blood pressure is now: 114/69), so I plan to stick with it.

LOL! Yeah, my bad, I was gonna post something about that too but the tunes I am listening to distracted me. You said "my gym" but I missed the "my" and just read gym as in gym class. Thats why πŸ™‚
