I have no sound card. By now, I probably wouldn't play UT with the sound on anyway...too much noise.
Ventrilo sounds like fun though, so I might have to get a card after all.

You can use the onboard sound card. I play with the music off and just listen for foot steps or gun fire.
Ventrilo makes it even more fun.

I also turned the music off in "preferences" in the game set up. You can't believe what a difference it makes hearing what's going on around you. There are footsteps ( as Concrete mentioned), the sound a translocator makes, the sound passing through a portal, the sound of someone spawning. All of which warn you that you have company, lol. Not to mention chatting in game with your fellow players can be a lot of fun. I would reccomend giving it a try at the least.
