Moon - is Peugeot reliable?

Moon,

When I get to Europe this fall I'm going to buy a cheap used car to drive around (cheaper than renting) and just store it at my house when I'm not there. I want something small and fuel efficient since gas is much more expensive there. There are many little used Peugeot cars for sale so I wonder if they are reliable, particularly late 80's models. Here are a few I was looking at:

lol, I had a Peugoet 205 (the smallest) and a 405 (the largest) and both are really reliable !

Those kinds of small cars can be used up to 250 000 kilometers with very few issues (even none)

About gas, you have to prefer the smallest one that needs about 2 liters less than the other in an average use of city or freeway.

Peugeot have (when all is in order) very good brakes and a nice behaviour on the roads.

Those are way better than Fiat (italian cars) and a bit better than the Renault you posted the last time you were there.

But, of course, if you hear something wrong when the engine is on, Peugeot is like any other firm : broken ! 😛 😉

If you have some others to compare, I'm the man. (I had about 40 different cars since I got my driving license and about 12 bikes) 😀

Lots of cheap Opel's for sale. Like the Kadett and Vectra. Do you know about those?

http://www.auto24.ee/webcache_kasutatud/675/auto_php-id=182675-www_auto24_ee.html

Also lots of Ford Sierra cars.

I want a brand that it is easy to get cheap parts for when I need to do maintenance (brakes, struts, etc) or to repair if it breaks.

When I lived in Germany, I had a Nissan. It was VERY expensive to buy new parts for it (any Japanese brand), so I sold it and bought a VW, which was cheap to get parts and repair.

There are also lots of cheap VW's, but I'm familiar with those.

Isn't Opel a division of Chevrolet?

Dude, if you can get a late 90s model Jetta or something along that line, I would go for that. Like a Jetta diesel. Reliable, fuel efficient, and will last forever.

Do they have those in Estonia?

Jarg : Opel is a european division of General Motors (Named Vauxhall in UK. At least some years ago)

Chicken : Opel or Ford are larger an above all heavier cars than Peugeot (lol >>> I had two Opel and three Ford 😀 😀 😀 ). In a general way they're more noisy (inside, while driving), a rather good machanic but MUCH more expensive in gas !!!... Hungry cars !

For personal maintenance, Opel , Peugeot and Ford (from these ages) are about the same rather simple engines. And, I'm not precisely a french cars fan but Peugeot is very reliable. My best friend's wife has one of those you sent (205 the smaller one) from the 80s and it works really nicely with its 200 000 kilometers ! (and a wife inside 😀 😀 😳 )

New Peugeot and Renault models are real rolling computers !!!! 🙁 Maybe too much sophisticated... 😕

Let me know if you need advice for other trade marks. 😉

Yeah, lots of Jettas and Golfs there, but I know all about those (I've owned 5 VW's).

Thought it would be fun to own something they don't sell in the States, just for a change.

I think the Peugeot's are neat looking and seem like a good value.

(I'm at my friends house and I couldn't open your links because of his firewall. I'll do it from home when I'm back).

Fiat is way less reliable than Peugeot but in France Fiat is much cheaper. In a general way, french small cars are reliable especially Peugeot.

France is a rather good small cars producer. Fiat are interesting for their price but you have to be careful about the kilometers they have.

OK ! That's cool, I could see the cars on your links. So : Citroen (AX model in France) is very cool to have a long life and to do self maintenance on it (as reliable as Peugeot and less gas !)

For the two Fiat models before, called Fiat UNO in France, not so good engines and more expensive in gas. In average, a Fiat can do about 100 000 or 120 000 kilometers in rather good conditions and, a Peugoet/Citroen currently goes over 200 000 kilometers with a simple few maintenance (oil level and brake pieces which are age and distance problems on any car or bike.

Thanks for the advice Moon. 😀

I think I'll look for a little Peugeot when I get there. 😉
